“Fragments of an Inevitable Collapse”

Fragments of an Inevitable Collapse
(for David Foster Wallace)

Haunted enchantment —

that glimmer in your eye

was terribly soothing.

You could’ve kept those storms

to yourself. Your clashing

hurricanes, your war tornadoes.

It didn’t take long — you started

to scare me, your mouth never matched

your facial expression.

You tried, but you never

could read me. If I’m a machine,

I need an update,

a re-wiring,

or better yet, a re-working

of my chromosomal code.

But instead, I’m left behind,

an abandoned instrument —

I’ll go on unplayed

when the music dies eventually.
