#OctPoWriMo Day 1

Shine

count beacons
of encouragement
in flickering flames
behind abandoned
window panes

she says it’s hope
restored, belief
in blessed returns,
& I learn

that darkness
can shine too,
that it can consume,
overtake a room

with fear &
emptiness
reflecting absence,
the pain of separation

& shared gloom;
flashes flicker,
rogue cameras
capture doom

countdown resumes,
a body
grows sicker,
but embers still burn

ignite this night,
this tattered heart,
this dying star
still holds its spark

her face is all I’ll ever see
within the endless dark
