Too Long Since I Dreamed
shaken awake
by hands of ancestors,
fear on my face,
my dreams having gathered them
to this panicked time & place
prophecy & resiliency,
Grandmother, Grandfather
whisper to me the importance
of making it
fading footsteps in the snow,
followed & forgotten
for generations, when one
little sick sparrow stumbles
upon some inner medicine,
some inklings of wisdom
left to crumble
I sing for those voices
guiding me in the night,
I dance for the children
waiting in the light
I wake up once more
to a world divided
& torn, heart-heavy
& bewildered
& before my feet hit the floor
I utter my thank you to
Great Spirit,
You’ve placed me here
for some reason
in this uncertain season
unclear to my cluttered mind
until I reacquaint myself
with the signs
my family, my people
have left behind
Note: I wrote this not long after waking up from a dream of some of my passed on native family. Since it’s Indigenous Peoples Day, I wanted to share.
This is a beautiful write …. from the heart..
“fading footsteps in the snow,
followed & forgotten
for generations, when one
little sick sparrow stumbles
upon some inner medicine,
some inklings of wisdom
left to crumble” Aha what a beauty..

So powerfully resonant. As a devotee of family constellations, this verse particularly evokes the tremendous healing available right now, “when one
little sick sparrow stumbles
upon some inner medicine,
some inklings of wisdom
left to crumble.”

We must keep alive the ancient ways. My Ojibwa grandmother taught me. teach the children well. To love nature, be kind to each other and remember. A wonderful poem shared dear Jennifer.
