Earth Mother
do we still feel
the warmth of a mother
when we lay upon the ground?
is the earth
breathing without difficulty yet?
crowded, smokestacks, buildings
blocking her beauty
the earth births hourly,
changes by the minute,
glories in each second
are we missing it?
painting our own screens
over her, looking at earth
through layers, through ashes,
thrown dirt?
carelessly stomping on her
broken heart, adding our
vitriol and hatred to her
life blood streams?
will we hold onto our mother
for dear life
when she has only the strength left to shake us off?
This is reminiscent of the question that Jim Morrison posed in “When the Music’s Over.”
“What have we done to the Earth? What have we done to our fair sister?”
