Winter Child

Winter Child
(for Sarah)

In weightless arms,
a snowbird
cooing softly

Outside, flurries whisper
a naming ceremony,
a wolf announces
the new birth

December is tired,
her labor, frozen
droplets on her brow,
rocking, rocking,
her winter child,
her feather light,
wisp of air

Breath is seen
and not heard
in her time,
stoke the fire,
sleep warmly
in Mother’s summer

She dreams of flying
in a blizzard, a lost child
smiling, of a thawing river,
but for now, all is still,
solid, and steady

Winds beat cold
Hearts beat wild
