#NaPoWriMo 2021 Day 4 : “Astrid”

Astrid

Astrid, your rough patch
stretched for miles,
razor blades behind
smiles, drawn to
scents and sounds,
crushed oleanders,
trash, expensive
gifts torn to
shreds, the dead,
all littering
your shaky ground

Astrid, trust is
hard and yours
is shattered, ashes
and glass tears
scattered, but
you swallow it
all, shard by shard,
to digest fear

smooth, poisoned
cream, imprisoned
white crow
manipulates
your dreams

Astrid, passed around
like chewing gum,
ice cubes in your
shorn hair, a young
girl’s work is
never done

untouchable, surviving,
dog’s teeth imprinted,
stinted, behind your tinted
Jackie O shades, thriving
on California sunsets
and Santa Ana winds

Astrid, your brittle ribs,
your bullet hole hips,
your Easter lily lips,
your oasis eyes,

they all haunt
a cell, a hell
you’re thrown
in too

Astrid, your mother
flows inside you,
so you cut

and collage
cut
and collage

cut everything off
so you can both
break free

Note: The inspiration for this poem comes from the book “White Oleander” by Janet Fitch, which I’m re-reading for probably the fifth time. It’s one of my favorites.

Have a very happy & blessed Easter to all who celebrate!

    1. I love the movie too! I was really bothered that Olivia wasn’t in it though. I wish it were an hour longer to include everything in the book.

Yes, I’ve read that one twice & that movie was pretty good too.
