Pyre
He wanted to hang on long enough
to see the view from within
the blazing fire.
We choke on him still. His
anger ashes. Like post-nasal
drip making its rounds again.
We’re all allergic to grief.
We can hear him yelling.
Burning alive while he
drags us by our ears
with him. You couldn’t
wait. Would you?
Fall funerals. Christmas-
lined caskets. He left
in summer to avoid
all the action. He told
us not to celebrate.
He said to stare directly
into the sun once a year
so we would know
how he lived.

Uhm. WOW. May I ask what this was inspired by, Jenn?

The sudden death of an old friend. It happened years ago, but it still burns. The theme is grief, essentially.

The poem starts in horror and ends in grief. I absolutely loved it! Though, it’s a deeply disturbing and moving poem!
