Poem & Interview In The Rappahannock Review

I have to admit that, like you, most of my rhymes are a little surprising to me when they show up in my writing. Someone will say, “I like your rhyming scheme” and I’ll be like… “What? Rhyming scheme?!?!?”
Congrats, Jenn. Both are fun reads.

Yeah, a lot of the time I think it’s the Detroit in me. 😉 Like, “I can’t escape freestylin'” or something. Thank you for reading. I’m glad you like!

The poem is jaw-dropping. I am trying to remember your voice and I want to say that’s not you actually readnig it, but it kinda sounds like you in a more stern and to-the-point tone. I enjoyed both the reading of it and the poem itself. I will read the interview later. I am sure it is just as golden, if not more.

Great interview, Jennifer. And I liked Fatherly Advice a lot, as well as Gutter Girls, which showed up in your feed.

Thanks! Ahh yes, “Gutter Girls” was a fun process too.

So great to hear you read this tremendous, trenchant poem, and I loved the interview. So many resonances with the way you alchemize poetry, even though it’s in no way a daily practice for me while I’m focused on writing the second book of my series. But you feed a fire long enough, it’s hard to starve out completely. 🙂

Thank you! I feel that what helps me write even a little a day is that I let go of trying to write “something good” every day. When I feel like “it’s all crap”, then it deters me from trying. I find myself taking a month to complete something and I’m not stressed by that anymore. So I’ll just say “this needs work”, and however long it takes is okay. It’s kind of fun to work on one line all day and see how it takes shape by the end of it.

I love your poem, especially the visual of your daddy mocking your finicking aunt and your connection to him even in physical absentia. I also enjoyed listening to you read it for us.
Thanks for the encouragement to write just a sentence a day. I need to get organized and get back to writing.
