NaPoWriMo 2023 — Day 1: “L’Excuse”

I’m participating in NaPoWriMo this year. Most poems will be off-prompt and unedited. I hope to get back into the practice of daily writing again and this is a good way to attempt to get back into the flow of things for me. Maybe some days I can only contribute a line, but that will be enough. Going slow to create things of quality as opposed to quantity of shared work is more my jam. For months I’ve felt like I’ve forgotten “how to poem”. So, this month I hope to remember at least a little bit. Happy writing, fellow participants! I look forward to reading your words this month.

1. L’Excuse

the spirit of dread
has been exorcised,
banished to the icon
of forgetting

the overflowing
void of the unknown
darkness beckons
the fool forward

the learning place,
where medicine grows
from the fertile ground
to cradle deep soul wounds

looms ahead
and the road is welcoming;
a single step
is a spark,

a lantern in the distance,
a future unseen
and unconquered
where a purifying fire burns

he carries the clouds
with him, sheltered
by sky beings
whose eyes peer down with courage

he journeys and stumbles,
then buries himself in
the soil to arise
and stand in the sunlight again

  1. Jennifer, your muscle memory where “poem-ing” is concerned is phenomenal! I will now always see the Smith-Waite Fool “sheltered by sky beings”…

  2. I love your first NaPoWriMo poem, Jennifer! The opening with that line “banished to the icon of forgetting”, that stopped me right in tracks! And it was strong all the way through. Looking forward to seeing what you write this month, but no pressure whatsoever of course 😊
